How to make locums travel easier.

Embarking on a locum tenens assignment creates excitement and opportunities for both professional growth and personal discovery. To make your journey as seamless as possible, we’ve curated a list of practical travel tips tailored for locum tenens physicians and advanced practitioners.

Navigate like a pro.

Airports can be unpredictable, but programs like TSA PreCheck or CLEAR can save you valuable time. These tools reduce pre-flight stress, allowing you to move through security with ease. With TSA PreCheck there is no need to remove shoes or electronics. Keep moving and keep your focus on the journey ahead.

CLEAR gives you the ability to use biometric screening, such as fingerprint or retina scan to skip the initial ID check at TSA. If you travel frequently, consider enrolling and streamline your airport experience with an online TSA PreCheck application and a CLEAR subscription if you’re a frequent flyer.

As of May 2025, all travelers flying within the U.S. are required to present a REAL ID-compliant license or an acceptable alternative (like a passport) to board federally regulated flights. Check your state-issued ID for a star symbol, which typically indicates it’s REAL ID-compliant. To learn more or verify your ID status, visit the TSA REAL ID page.

Organize your home.

Preparing for any journey requires planning, and a locums assignment is no different. Ensure your finances are organized, home is secure, and essential tasks are managed during your absence. Consider asking friends and family for support, allowing you to concentrate fully on your work.

Pack smart and plan ahead.

Pack smart and light by choosing versatile clothing that suits both work and leisure. Plan for weather conditions by layering and keep essential items like your ID and documents in your carry-on to avoid delays. Make sure your travel documents are sorted well in advance. Before you head out, take a look at our locum assignment tips for a practical guide to prepare for your assignment. As always, stay in touch with your Jackson and Coker contacts for support throughout your journey.

Track your expenses.

Effective expense tracking is crucial for locum tenens physicians and advanced practitioners, both for organization and to leverage potential tax benefits associated with working locums. While some expenses may be reimbursed, keeping clear records of out-of-pocket costs can make a big difference. Atlas, Jackson and Coker’s custom platform, simplifies the process of submitting expenses. For more on what’s deductible and how to navigate 1099 status, check out our Independent Contractor Guide.
