Balancing a demanding medical career with family obligations is a challenge. Locum tenens, working in short-term temporary roles, can offer a solution. It provides physicians and advanced practitioners, who are also parents and caregivers, with more control that can help them sustain their career without sacrificing family time or their well-being.

Customizable Schedules for Work-Life Balance

With locum tenens, you control your schedule. You choose the assignments you want and get to decide when and how much you work. That means you can align your work with your family.

You can opt to work part-time, only work certain days/shifts, or build in extended periods of time off. Want your weekend family time or a month off in the summer? With locums, that is possible. By designing a schedule that fits your life, you can have the work-life balance that is healthier than a traditional role may allow.

Ability to Push Pause + Avoid Burnout

Locum tenens may also let you take breaks when life demands it. Between contracts, you can simply pause. No matter the situation, whether it’s to care for a newborn, attend to an ailing parent, or just to recharge. This allows you to take a break without worrying about hurting your career.

You can avoid a long-term gap, since short breaks between locums assignments are expected. This kind of flexibility to step back when needed can help you prevent burnout. Instead of being locked into an inflexible role that can push you to your limits, locum tenens clinicians can adjust their workload or take time off to stay mentally and physically healthy. The result is a sustainable pace that allows you to stay engaged in your career and present for your family.

Geographic Freedom to Meet Family Needs

Another advantage of locum tenens is geographic flexibility. You are not tied to one location or employer long-term, so you can accept assignments in different states and cities to fit your family’s needs.

For example, if your partner’s job requires a change of location, or if you want to spend a season near extended family, locum tenens makes that feasible. This freedom to choose where you work means you can be in the right place at the right time without giving up your income. It is also a great opportunity to try living in new places without a permanent move.

Career Growth on Your Terms

Working locum tenens lets you continue growing in your profession, even if you adjust the amount of time you work for family reasons. Every new locums assignment may expose you to different patient types, healthcare systems, and practices, which may broaden your skills. You remain clinically active and keep your resume current, but on your schedule.

Even if you work fewer months in a year, you are still practicing medicine and possibly learning new techniques and systems. This means you don’t have to choose between family and career advancement. You define your career trajectory so you can slow down or ramp up as needed. In short, locum tenens lets you maintain forward momentum in your career on your terms, without the all-or-nothing commitment of a traditional full-time position.

Making Flexibility Work for You

To get the most out of a flexible career in locums, here are a few practical tips for parents and caregivers:

  • Set clear priorities: Decide what you need from your schedule (no night shifts, certain days off, or limit to X hours per week) and communicate those requirements upfront when exploring assignments. Our recruiters can often find opportunities that meet your criteria when they are shared at the beginning of the process.
  • Use your support networks: Work closely with your recruiting team to line up assignments that fit your life. We can help you plan logistics such as travel and housing but be sure to plan for childcare or elder care when necessary.
  • Stay organized: Keep track of your credentials, licenses, and scheduling details so you can transition in and out of assignments smoothly. Our team can help you maintain your calendar so it integrates with your priorities and we also keep important documentation on file so you don’t always have to share it when you start looking for a new role.

By proactively managing these aspects, you can truly take advantage of the flexibility of locum tenens and make it work for you and your family. The goal is to create a sustainable rhythm that keeps your medical career rewarding while preserving family time.

If you’re ready to explore a more flexible career path through locum tenens, we can help you get started. Embrace the opportunity to continue doing what you love while putting your family first.
