Imagine this: One of your busiest providers goes on unexpected leave, and your facility’s calendar is packed. The rush to find someone to cover for them can cause many issues, from staffing strains to reduced patient trust. For healthcare administrators and recruiters, maintaining patient satisfaction and the organization’s overall stability is essential. That is why continuity of care matters and a proactive locum tenens strategy, with a partner like Jackson and Coker, can help keep care consistent, maintain your standards, and help you avoid patient diversion during staffing changes.

Continuity of Care Impacts Patient Satisfaction

Having gaps in your staffing that causes delays and disruption erodes patient trust. Patients shouldn’t have to repeat their medical history or have lapses in their care just because their provider is out. When the care they receive appears continuous, the patient feels confident they are truly seen. This builds trust and can lead to higher satisfaction. On the other hand, a break in continuity, such as cancelled appointments or seeing an unprepared interim provider, can shake their confidence.

From a hospital or clinic perspective, poor continuity risks patient diversion. If you are unable to accommodate a patient due to a staffing gap, they might seek care elsewhere and may not return in the future. Maintaining continuity through locums can help keep patients loyal. It shows that even if the provider they have been seeing is away, the practice has a plan, and patients don’t have to start over.

Challenges When a Provider Leaves (or Arrives)

Provider transitions come with many challenges that threaten care standards. Here are some things to watch out for:

Coverage gaps

Without coverage, open slots in your schedule can lead to longer waits and overloaded permanent staff.

Solution

Work with us to plan and arrange for locums backup. Adjusting shifts and rescheduling non-urgent visits may solve your short-term problem, but if you line up locum tenens providers in advance, patient care doesn’t have to be put on hold.

Strained permanent staff

Filling in for a missing provider often means double duty for others on the team. Fatigue and burnout can become real dangers fast, creating risks for your staff and your patients

Solution

Bring in locum tenens help so the workload is distributed evenly rather than overburdening your team.

Communication breakdowns

Handoffs in a rush can result in a new or locum tenens provider not having important patient information.

Solution

Prioritize onboarding, training, and a structured handoff process. This is especially important for locum tenens providers who are not familiar with your facility’s communication style and systems

Patient anxiety

Like everyone, patients can get anxious with change. If they show up and are not told why they are seeing someone new, they may worry that their care will suffer.

Solution

Proactively communicate with patients. Let them know about the new provider and reassure them that you have a plan in place.

Recognizing these challenges allows for proactive solutions. Consistent and coordinated care helps minimize disruptions for patients when changes occur. Using locum tenens services, such as those offered by Jackson and Coker, can support this process.

Leveraging Locum Tenens for Smoother Transitions

Locum tenens can be one of the most effective resources during times of transition. When a locum tenens clinician steps in to see patients, you don’t have to cancel appointments or divert patients, so business (and care) carries on as usual. With a locums provider on your team, you are preventing your staff from being stretched to the breaking point. This also allows them to focus on their own patients rather than absorbing an extra caseload when a gap in care arises.

Furthermore, locum tenens professionals are fully credentialed and experienced just like your permanent providers, so they can uphold your organization’s standards. When you utilize locum tenens, the patient might meet a new face, but the level of care remains consistent.

Why partner with Jackson and Coker for locum tenens?

With 40+ years in the industry, we understand how critical the “right fit” is for continuity. We maintain a broad network of providers in all states and across many specialties. When a need arises, our team can identify candidates who match your requirements and culture so you can focus on providing your patients with care.

We also help manage the logistics such as credentialing paperwork, provider travel, and schedule management, so that onboarding a locum tenens to your team isn’t an administrative burden. The result? Your patients continue to receive care on time, and you avoid turning people away.

In the end, continuity of care is about sending a clear message to your patients: “We’ve got you, every day, no matter what.” With Jackson and Coker’s support and with a strong strategy in place, your organization can make provider transitions minimally disruptive for patients. They will keep experiencing the care they expect, and your facility will continue to thrive without missing a beat.
