Midwife cares for mother and child after delivery.“Even if a delivery doesn’t go as anticipated – there are still those moments I want women to realize that they did an amazing job. They worked hard. They have bragging rights. Those things make it worth it for me because healthcare can be tough, and it’s knowing I make a difference,” Lisa said.

Opportunity increase over the last two years at J+C.

National birth rates are increasing, and the demand for community and home birth rates are rising. Yet, access to midwifery care varies by location. At Jackson + Coker, we understand the evolving market for midwifery, and take time to listen to the needs and priorities of midwives like Lisa, so they can make a difference in every circumstance.

Priority treatment + pay.

When Lisa was looking to increase her income and enjoy more downtime with a change of scenery, she began to explore locum tenens. Lisa spoke with three agencies and chose Jackson + Coker as the best fit. “They offered the best support, were most attentive, prompt, and advocated for my best interests,” she said.

Our recruiters make each experience pleasant and personal. Lisa loved being able to quickly connect with her J+C team.

“I felt valued. I was able to call and get a direct line to someone who knew my first name and was interested in who I was and my needs.”

Negotiating pay rates can be challenging alongside managing the rigid needs of privileging and verification. “Jackson + Coker made the process so easy for me,” she said. “All the paperwork, verification, and licensing, and all the processes needed. They got me the wage I wanted, whereas other locums firms said, ‘No, you can’t go over that wage. They wouldn’t pay that.’ And that spoke a lot.”

Travel arrangements were made simpler with our in-house travel team. “Penny was my travel person, and she was nothing but amazing. I’d call her and she’d answer, which is huge,” Lisa shared. “I had choices, even from rural New York and on short notice.” Even with the many choices, her assignment in Orlando, Florida, would prove to be a little different than others.

Personal support.

In September 2022, Lisa was looking forward to a new location at a facility in Orlando with a great reputation and a team that valued midwifery. However, the weather had other plans as Hurricane Ian began its trek across the state and veered unexpectedly toward Orlando.

“I was scared. I didn’t know how bad it was going to hit, and I wasn’t sure if I was going to be stuck in this hospital for days,” Lisa said. Like many healthcare professionals, she chose to stay and ride it out. “The hospital brought all the healthcare staff in, and I slept on a mattress in some random office off of the labor and triage unit as the wind and the rain tumbled outside.”

Throughout the storm, the J+C team supported her, ensuring she could care for others while on assignment. “They checked on me, asking, ‘Are you okay? Is there anything we can do? Do you need anything?’ I really appreciated this,” she said.

When asked why she chose to stay through the category four hurricane, Lisa shared she doesn’t really remember Ian because she focused on the work at hand. “Maybe it was easier for me to focus because it was just me, and I didn’t have to worry about a house, family, or other things. That’s what I do. I go to work,” she said. “There were some hurricane babies. It just felt natural to stay; that’s what you do because that’s your job.”

Valued relationships.

Lisa continued as a locums midwife with the same facility after the hurricane and reached her personal goal of financial freedom. Locums with J+C empowers advanced practitioners like her to choose when and where they want to work while focusing on each provider’s priorities, personal and professional goals. For now, she is focused on family and enjoying her grandchildren.

While her locums days are behind her for now, Lisa has not closed the door on future opportunities. “I wouldn’t hesitate to come back to Jackson + Coker at all,” she shared. “It’s a journey, and it might sound corny, but it’s like they’re midwifing you. Saying, ‘You can do this! You can get to the other side! Look at all the things you can do!’ How great is that.”

“Jackson + Coker made me feel important, that my work was important, and that I was valued.”
